An only child, he loves scouting and does well in school. Then, in high school his friends goad him into reading the Bible, and he comes to believe in Jesus as the Messiah. His parents are upset and take him to a rabbi, but he is resolute. The first part ends when his father's rejection causes Gary to make a radical decision.
